GLACIERS: SCIENCE & NONSENSE - HERE ARE THE FACTS

Posted 29 March 2010

"If precipitation exceeds melting the glacier advances: if melting exceeds precipitation the glacier recedes, but there will be a time lag between cause and effect. In ice sheets it may take many thousands of years for ice to flow from the accumulation area to the melting area. The balance between movement and melting therefore does not relate to today's climate, but to the climate thousands of years ago. " Professor Cliff Ollier, writitng in Geoscientist, the fellowship magazine of the Geological Society of London.
