VISCOUNT MONCKTON GIVES SENATOR McCAIN A LESSON ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Science
In this 4-part link, Viscount Monckton, in an open letter to US presidential candidate Senator John McCain, treats the Republican candidate to a longish but very readable, and convincing lesson on the whole issue of "global warming" and emissions trading, which ought to be required reading for politicians everywhere. THE POLITICS OF SCIENCE & CLIMATE CHANGE: THE WRONG STUFF
Science

"The climate change problem is inherently one of making decisions over the very long term, under conditions of considerable uncertainty. Misrepresenting the problem as one where we can (with any degree of accuracy) set the global thermostat by limiting atmospheric CO2 to any particular level is not productive in the long run. Neither is defining the problem as one where we should necessarily focus on mitigating CO2 to the neglect of adaptation or other mitigation efforts." - Professor Aynsley Kellow, ex-pat Kiwi, Head of School of Govt., University of Tasmania: 2008 Harold Clough Lecture in Perth.  LINK

THE PUBLIC IS CONFUSED ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE
Policy

"At present, there seems only one way out of this dilemma: a major building programme for new nuclear power stations to provide a lower-carbon, energy-secure future, coupled with encouragement of a move to make road transport primarily electric. Even then, we have to accept that energy use will continue to increase (although energy intensity as a function of GDP will certainly be lower) and that vast quantities of oil and coal will continue to be used for the foreseeable future. In particular, air and sea transport will certainly remain dependent on fossil fuel use." - The Scientific Alliance, UK

GLOBAL WARMING - MYTH, THREAT OR OPPORTUNITY?
Science

"Complex interactive models can be constructed and adjusted to produce any desired result. Without verification they reflect only the ideas on which they are based. The famed mathematical physicist and father of cybernetics, John von Neumann, once said: "If you allow me four free parameters I can build a mathematical model that describes exactly everything that an elephant can do. If you allow me a fifth free parameter, the model I build will forecast that the elephant will fly."  - Dr Walter Starck    LINK

WHY THE CLIMATE SKEPTICS CONTINE THEIR FIGHT
Policy
Global warming is happening and we're to blame, right? That's certainly the view of almost every expert in the field. But a die-hard band of naysayers continues to rail against the consensus. Are they completely mad? Judge for yourself...     The Independent UK  LINK

DOUBTS ABOUT HEADLINE-GRABBING SCIENCE REPORTS
Science
"With so many scientific papers chasing so few pages in the most prestigious journals, the winners could be the ones most likely to oversell themselves—to trumpet dramatic or important results that later turn out to be false. This would produce a distorted picture of scientific knowledge, with less dramatic (but more accurate) results either relegated to obscure journals or left unpublished." - The Economist  LINK
