The UK Parliamentary hearings of the University of East Anglia CRU "Climategate" affair have re-ignited interest in the 'urban heat island effect'  (UHIE) - the natural process that shows temperatures to be warmer in built up cities than in rural countryside areas. This is important for accurate temperature assessment as more recording stations are absorbed into urban and built up environments and average records become distorted.
